GitHub is one of the places where a lot of the technical community hangs out so I am now experimenting in two ways to build more community and visibility on GitHub for Code for Boston. The first is instead of just inviting folks to collaborate on specific project repos, I am inviting regulars to the Code for Boston GitHub Organization and letting them know they can display their affiliation on their GitHub profile. So far I’ve had three members take me up on this, and am hoping more do at hack night tomorrow evening.
Secondly today at work I was experimenting with using the GitHub CLI to create a release of a project and really appreciated that the default release message has a section to recognize new contributors. What a wonderful way to highlight folks involvement in building projects!
